Duties:
• Manage and maintain a custom mass spec sample train, featuring various filters, chiller, heat exchangers, and scrubbers including regular titrations on scrubbers for water concentration;
• Integrate data with a mass flow meter, utilizing actual mass spec data based on gas viscosity and composition;
• Maintain and calibrate all lab instruments according to strict requirements as detailed in the instrument manuals;
• Conduct minor instrument repairs and calibration including the radio-Frequency Identification part of the bomb calorimeter;
• Perform research and development tasks involving the conduction of experiments to evaluate binders for implementation in plant processes;
• Operate a 1,100°C muffle furnace that will conduct ash analysis per American Society for Testing and Materials Standards;
• Using the thermogravimetric analyzer and differential scanning calorimetry instrument, develop methodology to determine the kinetics of the pyrolysis process;
• Operate and calibrate industrial mass spectrometer for gas analysis on pyrolysis kiln runs;
• Be the point of contact for external service providers, including equipment maintenance, utilities, and waste management;
• Utilize Excel to monitor analytical costs, automate instrument supply reordering based on volume and costs;
• Interpreting test results and compiling technical reports;
• Design and maintain a database system (using Access or equivalent) to efficiently organize and track data extracted from laboratory instruments, ensuring accurate and accessible record-keeping for analytical results and instrument performance.
Education:
• A Masters’ or PhD degree in relevant scientific or technical field, or equivalent educational background.
Experience:
• 3 years laboratory experience with preference to similar industry, gas processing and equipment; paying special attention to standard procedures, quality control, instrument manuals, and standard operating procedures.
Skills:
• Proficiency in viscosity and pressure drop calculations is crucial;
• Proficient in Excel visual basics for application for program management and calculation of pyrolysis kiln performance, including pyrogas, biochar, and bio-oil yields;
• Familiarity with MEB (Mass and Energy Balance) computer program for predicting overall pyrolysis kiln and ancillary equipment performance;
• Experience with mass spectrometer is preferred but not required;
• Strong background working with precision lab equipment and familiarity in analysis equipment and calibration;
• Proficiency in utilizing Windows software applications, typically associated with engineering, including excel; and
• Proficiency in utilizing visual basic for application for data analysis.
Salary: CAD $70,000.00 to CAD $80,000.00 per annum
Hours: 40 hours per week
